Portulaca villosa 'pink'

Portulaca villosa 'pink'

This is an enjoyable native Hawaiian plant to grow, endemic to all of the major islands of the archipelago as well as Nihoa and Ka'ula. It is rare in its remaining dry habitats of lava, clay, rocky, or coralline reef sites from sea level to 1,600' elevation and is a candidate endangered plant species.

Unlike some other commonly cultivated Portulaca species, this is tame and of smaller stature. Its cute finger leaves sparkle in the sunlight, and the curious fuzz present at each leaf node along the stem is a delight. The pink crape paper-like flowers are delicate and each flower lasts just a day, but often new ones are in the wings just a day or two behind.

In cultivation it requires excellent drainage, strong sun and heat. It deserves to be grown in more dry lowland gardens in Hawai'i and would also be a wonderful addition to the collections of succulent growers around the world.

Fall Wedding

Fall Wedding

Yesterday was cold and miserable here in town but we still had to do SOMETHING for photos.

Originally the couple wanted to go to another location (the grounds at the Dearness Home) but felt it was too windy to go there.

This was taken at St. Justin's (where they were married) over on Jalna. The down side to this location was the fact that the buildings were RIGHT behind her (hence the tight crop known as Stukeh). The dress is cut off on photo right because I was dodging Dana at the time. I had other shots where the entire dress was in the frame but she either wasn't looking or she was making a rather unflattering expression...oh an in case you're wondering why the ground in the bottom left is bare, everything got pulled under her dress.....better her than me (not that I wear dresses (not that there's anything wrong with guys that DO wear dresses))

I liked this one enough that I'm posting it anyway! Take it and weep suckah's Stukeh forever!!
